Giovanni's Journey: From Challenges to Championing Lasting Transformation
Jan 08, 2026
At ten years old, a routine scoliosis screening at school became a pivotal moment for me. Standing shirtless in front of classmates while medical staff checked my spine, I felt vulnerable and self-conscious about my body. It was an awkward experience that highlighted how society often views weight, but it also sparked an early awareness of my health.
Growing up "big-boned" (as people kindly said), shopping in the husky section taught me resilience—and ignited a lifelong commitment to understanding wellness from the inside out.My weight fluctuated like a yo-yo for years, dipping as low as 175 pounds and climbing to 330. Each time I lost weight, friends and family celebrated my determination. I explored every approach: vegan eating, Atkins, calorie counting, fasting—you name it.
My workouts were intense, like preparing for the Olympics. These efforts proved that change was possible, building my knowledge of nutrition, exercise, and what truly fuels the body.Yet the real breakthrough came when I chose gastric bypass surgery in 2007. With a young family depending on me, I wanted to ensure I'd be there for every milestone. My doctor guided me swiftly through the process, and I selected bypass for its powerful impact on ghrelin—the hormone that drives hunger. By significantly reducing ghrelin production, the surgery quieted those relentless cravings in a way other options (like the lap band, which restricts but doesn't reset hunger signals) couldn't match.
For the first 8-10 months, my appetite was minimal; I focused on nourishing my body rather than fighting urges. Over time, hunger returned gently to about 60% of before—manageable and sustainable. The early recovery wasn't easy—adjusting to a new digestive system, starting supplements (calcium, multivitamin, B-12) for life, and navigating potential deficiencies. But those challenges were temporary stepping stones.
Today, 18+ years later, I've maintained my success, feeling vibrant, energetic, and fully present for my loved ones.Surgery was an incredible tool, but the true magic happened in the mindset shift. We may look transformed on the outside, yet the mental habits take time to catch up. That's why I'm so passionate about holistic coaching: combining physical strategies with emotional and mental support for lifelong thriving.
Now, as a certified life and health coach specializing in post-bariatric journeys, I guide others to build unbreakable habits, reclaim confidence, and embrace joy beyond the scale.
My story isn't about perfection—it's about empowerment, resilience, and turning personal triumphs into shared victories. If you're on a similar path, know this: You're capable of extraordinary change. Surgery can reset the body; coaching helps align the mind and heart for a life that's truly fulfilling.
